River is implemented using Adobe Systems’ Flash9/Flex3 media viewer software. This is a web browser plug-in that enables display/experience of so-called “Rich Internet Application” (“RIA”) environments such as ours. River was written using the ActionScript3 (“AS3”) programming environment.

In addition to AS3 code, River makes use of the following Web 2.0 services:
Flickr.com (using the Flickr Application Programming Interface (“API”) to provide storage of River’s photo database) and Advanced Flash Components' UMap - an API for interacting with web-based map services - provinding interactive geo-tagged maps of River’s photos).
To run River’s interactive soundscape, River employs custom experimental software algorithms. Such software gives River its sense of alien agency and allows it to react to visitors’ actions.
River’s non-linear poetic search technology is another custom experimental software creation. This allows visitors to conduct their own poetic enquiry into data and, as well, to view the contributions of other River visitors.
